CoastMath imports a ProjectionLab JSON backup or a Boldin Summary CSV into a new, separate plan. You review every item before the plan is created. The file, your other plans and your household accounts aren’t changed.
An import carries over inputs, not results. CoastMath computes its own growth, taxes and withdrawals, so the imported plan won’t reproduce the other planner’s forecast, and some settings need manual setup afterwards.
- Import in the web planner. The iPhone app doesn’t import; an imported plan appears there after you pull to refresh.
- On the free plan you keep one active plan, and an imported plan counts. New plan first offers to archive your current plan; see Free and Premium.
- In a temporary session, your plans depend on this browser’s cookie. Sign in to keep access.
- In ProjectionLab, choose Account › Export Data to download a JSON backup. Forecast CSV reports aren’t accepted.
- In CoastMath, choose Import from ProjectionLab, pick the backup (up to 10 MB) and choose Read backup.
- Pick the Plan to import, then Review import.
- Check Opening balance date, birth years and months, Longevity age, Filing status and State. After changing any of them, choose Update preview.
- Untick any item you don’t want. For each account, check Opening balance, and for a taxable account its Cost basis. Review the growth and inflation rates.
- Read Needs manual setup, Skipped items and Import limitations, tick I reviewed the inputs and omissions, and choose Create imported plan.
| Area | Imported | Set up yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Household | Birth years and months, state, filing status, planning end ages (95 when the backup has none) | Plans outside the US or in another currency are refused |
| Accounts | Checking, savings, 401(k), Roth 401(k), IRA, Roth IRA, taxable, HSA and 529 balances, owners and taxable cost basis; crypto becomes a taxable brokerage account | Custom account return settings, fees, inheritance rules, Roth contribution and conversion history |
| Income and spending | Salary, pension and Social Security income; recurring monthly or yearly expenses; fixed growth rates, inflation linking and growth caps | Cash-flow priorities, contributions, matches, transfers, withholding beyond a fixed rate, advanced event options |
| Dates | Fixed dates, years and ages, including those set by a simple milestone, become dated start and end points | Standalone or dynamic milestones and dates that depend on the projection |
| Assumptions | Fixed inflation, stock growth and dividend rates; bond growth plus bond dividends become one total bond return | Custom curves, historical or Monte Carlo settings, bond allocation and glide paths |
| Other | None | Property, debts, withdrawal strategies, tax settings, Medicare costs, estate settings; hidden events are skipped |
Monthly amounts are multiplied by 12. Amounts are read as dollars of the plan’s first year.
- In Boldin, open View Full Plan, choose Future Dollars, then download the Summary CSV.
- In CoastMath, choose Import from Boldin, pick the CSV (up to 2 MB), choose the Forecast scenario (Average, Optimistic or Pessimistic), tick I exported in Future Dollars (nominal USD) and choose Review import.
- Choose the Year-end snapshot. The plan starts January 1 of the following year from that year’s ending balances.
- Check the estimated Birth year, Partner birth year, Filing status and State.
- For each account, choose the Account type and Owner, and for a taxable brokerage account the Cost basis at snapshot date. Use Override year-end balance to replace the exported amount.
- For each income schedule, choose Income tax treatment and Income owner, or untick it. Untick any spending schedule you’ll model another way.
- Set the growth and inflation rates. They start at CoastMath’s defaults, not your Boldin settings. Tick I reviewed the snapshot and omitted inputs and choose Create imported plan.
The CSV holds forecast values, not the inputs behind them, so CoastMath imports it as a snapshot:
- Each year’s nonzero income or spending becomes its own January-to-December item at the exported amount, named with its year, such as “Salary (2028)”, with no further growth. Each year also gets a pair of dated milestones, “2028 start” and “2028 end”.
- Nothing continues past the last year in the file. The planning end age comes from the file’s last year, not from your Boldin longevity setting.
- Taxes, required distributions, withdrawals and investment returns in the file are results, so they aren’t imported; CoastMath calculates its own.
- Contributions, matches, transfers, Roth conversions and history, property, debts, inheritance rules, birth months and dates within a year aren’t in the file. A snapshot year that already shows Lifetime Debt is refused; choose an earlier year.
The new plan is a fixed-date plan that starts on the opening balance date. It has its own accounts, listed as Accounts · this plan, so editing them doesn’t touch your other plans. It starts with detailed US taxes, monthly cash flows, the default drawdown order by account type and automatic health coverage costs off. Its Notes record the source file’s fingerprint and which items were left out.
- Work through the manual-setup items, starting with contributions in Income allocation and any home or loan in Property and debt.
- Check that each account’s type and cost basis are right; type decides how withdrawals are taxed. See Opening balances and cost basis.
- If the opening date has passed, decide whether to keep it or switch Plan detailsPlan type to Now. A Now plan treats the imported balances as today’s, so update them. See Your plan’s start date and first year.
- For a Boldin import that includes medical or Medicare spending, untick or delete those schedules before turning on Health coverage, or the costs count twice.
To test changes without losing the imported version, see Copy a plan and compare changes.
If creating the plan fails, your review stays on screen; submit it again when ready. A second submission of the same review, including a double click or a retry after a lost connection, returns the plan already created instead of a copy. To change your choices after a plan was created from them, start a new import. Several uploads within a minute can be refused briefly; your review is kept.
